Sacred Mount Tai

The Taishan (Mount Tai) is the most important of the five Taoist sacred mountains, now target of hords of pilgrims and tourists. Together with Qufu, Confucius' birthplace, Taishan (1545 m.) is by far the best sight in Shandong Province, with a huge display of temples, towers, pavilions, caves and inscribed stones.
Among these: the Red Gate Palace and the Azure Clouds Temple, both dedicated to the daughter of the god of the Taishan, the Princess of the Azure Clouds, who, together with Guanyin, assists women during pregnancy; the temple dedicated to Xiwangmu, the Queen Mother of the West; the temple and the cave dwelling of the immortal Lü Dongbin; at the top, the Jade Emperor Temple.

	The main hall of the Azure Clouds Temple, a complex of bulidings dating back to the Song Dynasty. Since 1754 to 1911, every year the 18th of the four month, an imperial envoy was sent to the temple with rich offerings to the deity.
