This construction, comparable to "be able to", expresses the subject's capability to perform the action expressed by the verb. Most of the times, Chinese people use this construction rather than the auxiliary "to can".
1. Positive form: You can only add this form to a verb + result complement, by adding the particle de between verb and result:
She will certainly be able to come back.
I will remember it.
Can you still eat?
It is also possible to stress the subject's capability by adding an auxiliary verb, usually neng:
He can do it.
2. Negative form: To deny a potential complement, just use bu (never mei!) instead of de:
I can't read.
I am not able to settle this matter.
3. Interrogative form: To express an exclusive interrogative, use the construction V + de + CAP + V + bu + CAP:
